Overview
This Master's program combines the fields of Tourism Economics and Regional Economics. The program, offered since 2012, is fully taught in English, and attended by students from different countries. The region of Algarve is a natural laboratory for Tourism Economics and Regional Development. Hence, this three-semester program (total of 90 ECTS) aims not only to provide students with a knowledge in these fields, but also to explore its practical applications. Our motto is: Bridging Theory and Practice.

Objectives

  • To analyze the complexity of the economic dimension of tourism and its connection to regional development
  • To evaluate the economic impact of tourism
  • To plan and manage tourism projects
  • To use advanced research methods and techniques
  • To contribute to the setting and implementation of policies in the domains of tourism and regional development

Double Degree

Our Masters is integrated in a Double Degree Program with the Master's in Economics of Tourism: Monitoring and Evaluation, offered by the University of the Balearic Islands (Spain).

Students that conclude our Masters can also obtain the Degree of the Master's in Economics of Tourism: Monitoring and Evaluation, by spending a semester at the University of the Balearic Islands and approving in 30 ECTS.

Founding Editor of Annals of Tourism Research: A Social Sciences Journal; Chief Editor of Tourism Social Science Series; Co-Chief Editor of Bridging Tourism Theory and Practice book series; Chief Editor of Encyclopedia of Tourism; Co-Founding Editor of Information Technology & Tourism; Co-Founder of TRINET: Tourism Research Information Network; and Founding President of the International Academy for the Study of Tourism.
A cultural anthropologist (PhD, University of Minnesota, USA) and a hotel administration graduate (BS and MS, Cornell University, USA), with an honorary doctorate from the Universitat de les Illes Balears (Spain) and the recipient of the 2005 United Nations World Tourism Organization Ulysses Award. He is Visiting Professor of the Universidade do Algarve (Portugal) and Sun Yat-sen University (China), international Program Director of the Universitat de les Illes Balears (Spain), and faculty member of the University of Wisconsin-Stout Department of Hospitality and Tourism (USA). Adão Flores (aflores@ualg.pt)

Assistant Professor. PhD holder in Management and MA holder in Economic and Management Sciences, his main research interests are tourism destinations management and governance, tourism innovation and development of products. He has published both in national and international journals. In the Faculty, he is also a member of the coordinating body of the PhD Programme in Tourism. 

Ana Paula Barreira (aprodrig@ualg.pt)

Ana Paula is a PhD holder in Economics and a MA holder in Economic and Management Sciences. She is Assistant Professor, and a member of the Research Centre on Spatial and Organizational Dynamics. She has researched in political and electoral cycles in government spending, fiscal federalism applied to the Portuguese municipalities and spatial effects. She has been the national delegate in the Management Committee in the European project COST: "Cities regrowing smaller - fostering knowledge on regeneration strategies in shrinking cities across Europe". Presently she is a mamber of the Directive Board of the Master in Tourism Economics and Regional Development. 

André Leitão (aleitao@ualg.pt)

Assistant professor. Holds a PhD in Environmental Engineering and a Master degree in Geo-Recourses from the Technical University of Lisbon. His main research areas of interest are territorial and ecological planning, urban spaces, planning of coastal and marine areas, landscape ecology, nature conservation and biodiversity planning, sustainable planning of rural spaces.

Antónia Correia (acorreia@ualg.pt)

Assistant Professor. Holds a PhD in Economics, University of the Algarve and a MA in Strategy from the University of Lisbon. Her research interests include consumer behavior; discrete choice models and decision models; tourism economics; risk and uncertainty, prices and markets, social rationality.

António Matias (amatias@ualg.pt)

António Matias is a PhD holder in Economics and a MA holder in Economic and Management Sciences. He is an Assistant Professor. He was a Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Economics and nowadays he is the Director of the Bachelor Course in Economics at the University of the Algarve. His main research interests are environmental and resource economics and tourism economics. He is a mamber of the Directive Board of the Master in Tourism Economics and Regional Development.

Invited Professor. Holds a PhD in Tourism and a MA in Marketing from the University of the Algarve. Her main research interests are consumer behavior, marketing, tourism destination image.

Efigénio Rebelo (elrebelo@ualg.pt)

Efigénio Rebelo is Full Professor of Quantitative Methods Applied to Economics and Management. PhD holder in Economics, specialized in Econometrics, he also holds both an MA in Econometrics from the School of Economics of the University of Manchester and an MSc in Mathematics Applied to Economics and Management from the Technical University of Lisbon. He has been a member of the Research Centre on Spatial and Organizational Dynamics and his publications in international journals are mainly in the field of quantitative methods. Previously, he was a member of the Council of the University of Algarve and Dean of the Faculty of Economics. Nowadays he is the President of the Scientific Committee and the Director of the PhD Program in Economic and Management Sciences.

Hugo Pinto (hpinto@ualg.pt)

PhD in Economics, University of Coimbra. Currently he is a post-doctoral research fellow at Centre for Social Studies, University of Coimbra and a visiting Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Economics, University of Algarve. His research interests are innovation systems, knowledge production and transfer, emergence of maritime clusters, and regional development. He has published both in national and international journals.

PhD holder in Tourism and Master in Economics and Business Studies. Her main interests focus on tourism research and also on both qualitative and quantitative data analyses.

João Albino Silva (jsilva@ualg.pt)

João Silva is Full Professor of Economics and a member of the Research Centre on Spatial and Organizational Dynamics. He holds both a PhD and a MA in Economics from the Technical University of Lisbon. He is the Chair of the Economics Scientific Area and the Director of the PhD Program in Tourism. He is also the President of the National Commission for the Assessment of University Tourism Programs. His current research interests include economics of tourism, regional development and tourism destinations, sustainability and governance in tourism.

Jorge Andraz (jandraz@ualg.pt)

Jorge Andraz is a PhD holder in Economics and a MA holder in Economic and Management Sciences. He is an Assistant Aggregated Professor and a member of the Centre for Advanced Studies in Management and Economics. He authored several books related to the macroeconomic effects of public investments, and several articles published in international journals in the area of applied econometrics focusing macroeconomic and financial issues related to economic growth, the effects of public policies and tourism. He is Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Economics and also the Director of the Master Course in Financial Economics. He is a mamber of the Directive Board of the Master in Tourism Economics and Regional Development. 

Júlio Mendes (jmendes@ualg.pt)

PhD holder in Management, specializing in strategy and organizational behavior, and a MA holder in Economic and Management Sciences. Assistant Professor and a member of the Research Centre on Spatial and Organizational Dynamics, he is also the Director of the Master Course in Tourism Organizations Management and a member of the coordinating body of the PhD Programme in Tourism. His current research interests include excellence and integrated quality management in tourism destinations, tourism experience, events management, tourism destinations image, and branding and customer satisfaction. He has published both in national and international journals.

Óscar Ferreira (oferreir@ualg.pt)

Holds a PhD in Marine Sciences. He is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Algarve. He is a member of the Marine and Environmental Research Center. His current research interest include dynamic coastline, coastal risks, marine geology, coastal management, wave and tidal energy. He has published both in national and international journals.

Patrícia Pinto is a PhD holder in Quantitative Methods Applied to Economics and Management, specialized in Statistics, and an Associate Aggregated Professor at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Algarve. She is also the Vice-president of the Research Centre on Spatial and Organizational Dynamics, a member of the coordinating body of the PhD program in Tourism and the Chair of the Quantitative Methods Scientific Area. Her current research interests include applied statistics and modeling in the areas of integrated quality management in tourism destinations, events management, tourism destinations image, branding, marketing strategies, customer satisfaction, and environmental behaviour.

Pedro Pintassilgo (ppintas@ualg.pt)

PhD holder in Natural Resource Economics from the New University of Lisbon and an Assistant Aggregated Professor at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Algarve. He is the Director of the Master Course in Tourism Economics and Regional Development and a member of the Research Centre on Spatial and Organizational Dynamics. He has published in influential journals in the fields of environmental economics and tourism economics. 

Rui Nunes (rnunes@ualg.pt)

Rui Nunes is both a PhD and a MA holder in Economics, specialized in Econometrics, by the School of Economics of the University of Manchester, and an MSc holder in Mathematics Applied to Economics and Management from the Technical University of Lisbon. Associate Professor of Quantitative Methods Applied to Economics and Management, currently he is the Dean of the Faculty of Economics of the University of Algarve. He is also a member of the General Council of the University of Algarve and the Director of the PhD Programme in Quantitative Methods Applied to Economics and Management. His research interests are mostly in the field of Quantitative Methods Applied to Economics.

Teresa de Noronha (mtvaz@ualg.pt)

PhD in Economics, University of Algarve, she is Associate Professor at the Faculty of Economics, University of Algarve and Invited Professor at the University of Toronto. She authored and edited numerous scientific articles and books in the area of Regional Economics and Economics of Innovation. She is Director of the PhD Programme in Innovation and Land Use Management.

National Students: 3000 Euros (1st year - 2250 Euros; 2nd year - 750 Euros)

International Students*: 4000 Euros (1st year - 2250 Euros; 2nd year - 1750 Euros)

Note: The tuition of this course can be paid in 10 installments, being the first at the time of registration and the remaining in the months of October, November, December, January, February, March, April, May and June.
