In the 2026 edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject, the University of the Algarve (UAlg) has joined three new areas of high relevance: Hospitality & Leisure Management, Environmental Sciences, and Archaeology.

In Hospitality & Leisure Management, among the 174 higher education institutions featured in this field, UAlg is the only Portuguese university included in the ranking, positioning itself between 151st and 175th place.

In Environmental Sciences, the institution ranks between 501st and 550th worldwide, being one of only six Portuguese higher education institutions present in this area.

In Archaeology, UAlg is positioned between 201st and 260th, joining the group of four Portuguese higher education institutions featured in this subject.

UAlg’s presence in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026, particularly its entry into these three specific new areas, reinforces the growth the university has seen in recent years across both teaching and research. This impact has contributed to the development of the Algarve region and is increasingly evident at both national and international levels.

This international recognition also highlights the strategic importance of the education and research developed by UAlg for the region’s progress. By qualifying human resources, producing knowledge, and promoting innovation in areas relevant to the territory, UAlg asserts itself as an essential agent in the economic, social, cultural, and environmental development of the Algarve, contributing to the region's competitiveness and sustainability.

The 2026 edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject includes 55 specific subjects across five broad thematic areas. This is the largest edition ever, featuring over 1,900 institutions, more than 300 of which appear for the first time.
