Overview
The PhD in Tourism aims to meet the advanced training needs of master’s degree holders in the fields of Tourism, Management, Economics, and Social Sciences, promoting an in-depth understanding and consolidation of knowledge on tourism phenomena and dynamics. From a scientific perspective, the Programme addresses the tourism system through an interdisciplinary approach, exploring theoretical and conceptual frameworks across regional, national, and international contexts. The course unit Thematic Seminars in Tourism enables doctoral candidates to develop a critical and integrated understanding of contemporary tourism challenges. Structured over three years (see Study Plan), the Programme also provides solid training in Research Methodologies and Advanced Data Analysis, preparing doctoral candidates for the conceptualisation of their thesis project and the subsequent autonomous and rigorous development of a doctoral thesis, as well as for highly qualified scientific, academic, or professional careers. The thesis will be supervised by a scientific advisory team. Doctoral candidates will also complete three Doctoral Days, during which they will present the progress of their scientific work. The University of Algarve (UAlg) is listed among the world’s best institutions in the Shanghai Ranking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2025, standing out in the area of Hospitality & Tourism Management, and is the only Portuguese institution to remain in the Top 100.
