Milene Lança holds a PhD in Tourism and Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in Sociology from the Faculty of Economics of the University of Algarve. Her doctoral research analysed tourists’ practices and perspectives on love, sex, and romance in the Algarve, grounded in the theories of tourism liminality and communitas, and established a solid interdisciplinary framework at the intersection of tourism studies and sociology. Since 2007, she has developed a sustained research career through participation in multiple national and international projects and the production of a robust body of scientific publications in tourism, sustainability, consumer behaviour, gender studies, human sexual behaviour, and applied statistics. Over the last five years, her research agenda has converged on sustainable tourism development, with a particular focus on residents’ perceptions, attitudes, and pro-tourism behaviours in mature destinations. Her research is characterised by a rigorous mixed-methods approach, integrating advanced quantitative modeling with qualitative analysis to assess the social, environmental, and cultural impacts of tourism and to inform evidence-based destination management. She has made significant theoretical and empirical contributions to the literature on residents’ support for tourism, emotional solidarity between residents and tourists, and destination sustainability, disseminated through peer-reviewed publications in internationally recognised journals and international edited volumes. Her work has been supported by competitive national and European funding, notably in projects dedicated to tourism monitoring systems and residents’ attitudes towards sustainable development. She actively disseminates her research at international conferences and contributes to postgraduate supervision, supporting advanced research training in tourism and sociology studies. Overall, her scientific profile demonstrates strong thematic coherence, methodological excellence, and clear societal relevance. Her expertise spans both the liminal dimensions of tourism experiences, critical for interpreting tourists’ norm-deviant behaviours, and host–guest relationship dynamics. Her advanced skills in multivariate data analysis further strengthen her capacity to interpret complex survey data in funded research projects. Alongside her research activity, Milene has a consolidated teaching profile. She teaches undergraduate courses at the School of Education and Communication and at the Faculty of Economics of the University of the Algarve, where she is an Invited Assistant Professor. She is also an Integrated Researcher at CinTurs (Research Centre for Tourism, Sustainability and Well-being), actively contributing to its scientific strategy and collaborative research.
